Even a few decades ago, most of the hills in the Notranjska Park were bare, as on the steep slopes they mainly grazed, and on the flatter slopes and on the summits they mowed the grass. With the gradual abandonment of mowing and grazing in the hilly areas, the former meadows and pastures are becoming overgrown with forest, and some areas around Lake Cerknica are also becoming overgrown.
Humans have also influenced the landscape around Lake Cerknica. The construction of the embankment that connects Dolenje Jezero with Goričico, the construction of bridges at Otok, the construction of embankments in Vodonos and Rešetu, changes to the beds of Stržen, and works on numerous sinkholes have changed the landscape, while also affecting the rate of draining and filling of Lake Cerknica.
