Titmice are small and lively, fairly rounded birds with short conical beaks, with which they deftly hop about and catch insects, their larvae, and other small invertebrates. Titmice are mainly resident birds that overwinter in their breeding range; only in exceptionally cold winters do they retreat from the cold to the south or at least to lower-lying areas. This family includes nine species that occur in Europe. They inhabit various types of forests, where they nest in holes and similar hollows, but they have also successfully settled near humans, where a suitable nesting site can be found even in a hole in a wall or in nest boxes provided for them.
