Falcons (Falconidae) are, alongside hawks (Accipitridae) and fish eagles (Pandionidae), the third family of birds of prey whose representatives live in Slovenia. Raptors (order Falconiformes) are a higher taxonomic category into which, based on the characteristics of their representatives, we classify all three families. Falcons are small to medium-sized birds of prey with narrow, pointed wings, a small hooked, but sharp beak, and sharp talons. Falcons are exceptionally fast and agile fliers, which most often seize and dispatch their prey in mid-air.
In Slovenia there are eight species of falcons, all belonging to a single genus (Falco). In the Notranjska Regional Park area, three species of falcons live, and one more stops here during the spring migration.
