The Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) is a widely distributed and common butterfly that can be observed on the seashore and also high above the tree line. Regarding habitat choice, it is not choosy; it is more common in meadows where it searches for food and chases after the females.
The upperside of the male's wings is uniformly blue and shines with a slight purplish metallic sheen. The females are dark brown on the upperside with a bit of blue haze; along the outer edge of the forewings and the trailing edge of the hindwings they have orange spots. The band of spots on the outer and hind margins of the wings is of uniform color in the Common Blue. In males the spots are white, in females brownish.
