Common fritillary (Melitaea athalia) is the largest and most common among the four species in the group of closely related and visually very similar fritillaries (jetičnikov, marsh fritillary, dark and common fritillary). The orange bands on the upper side of the wings in the common fritillary are distinctly wide, light and almost continuous.
The Common fritillary is widely distributed in Slovenia and very common. Its range extends from the lowlands to the forest boundary. It lives on all types of meadows, both dry and moist. It can also be found on cultivated meadows that are mowed two or three times. It occurs less frequently on meadows that are becoming overgrown with woody species, and it avoids dense shrubs and forests.
