Wingspan: 42–55 mm
Flight period of butterflies: in one generation from May to August
Larval host plants: species from the genus Viola (Viola)
Niobe fritillary (Argynnis niobe) is similar to the speckled fritillary. It is only barely smaller, and the color and pattern on the upper side of the wings are almost identical in both species. We distinguish them by coloration and pattern on the underside of the hindwings. The bright spots in the middle of the wings are black-bordered in the Niobe fritillary, while in the speckled they have only the outer edge in black. In addition, the Niobe fritillary usually has a black dot on the inner third of the hindwing, which the related species does not have (in the butterfly in the picture this dot is faint and blurred).
The Niobe fritillary is another good flyer that lives in grasslands dotted with scattered shrubs, rocky slopes, and forest clearings. It occurs from the sea to the high mountains.
