Small fritillary (Clossiana dia) belongs to the smaller speckled butterflies that flutter about shrubby landscapes, on the edges of forests and in dry and damp meadows.

The pattern of black marks on the orange upper side of its wings is very similar to the pattern of other fritillary species that live here. This species is easiest to recognize by the distinctly shaped hindwings, their upper edge in the outer edge transitions almost at a right angle. Additionally, the broad hindwings when at rest protrude above the forewings. On the brown-purple underside of the hindwings there are two bands of lighter spots – one band is roughly in the middle of the wings, the other just at their outer edge. Between them there is also a band of dark purple spots in the shape of eyes.
