Shrubland skipper (Coenonympha arcania) is a medium-sized skipper that is easiest to recognize when at rest it shows the underside of the hindwings. This is grayish-brown and has, among the pattern of false eye-spots, a wavy whitish band. Orange- and brown-edged black eye-spots with white centers lie on both sides of this light spot, their number may vary somewhat from butterfly to butterfly. The underside of the forewings is brown-orange with a more or less pronounced eye-spot in the upper outer corner. Along the outer edge of the dark orange upperside of the forewings is a broad dark brown band. The hindwings are uniformly brown on the upperside, with an orange line running along their lower edge.

The shrubland skipper is one of the more common species of butterflies in our country. It prefers to perch on shrubs at the edge of flowering meadows, and occurs from the sea to the forest edge.
