The white-lipped ringlet (Coenonympha glycerion) is a small butterfly that hides well at rest due to its unobtrusive coloration. The upperside of the wings is dark brown in both sexes, only the forewings of the female are light brown. The forewings of the white-lipped ringlet are orange-brown on the underside. Along the outer edge of the grey-brown hindwings there is a pattern of pronounced ’eye-spots’, their number and size can vary somewhat among individuals. Compared with the similar shrub ringlet, the white-lipped ringlet has much smaller pale spots at the false eye-spots.
The white-lipped ringlet lives from the lowlands to the forest edge in dry and moist grassy areas. It is especially suited to grassy habitats that are being overgrown with woody vegetation.
