In Slovenia, larger slow-flowing and standing waters are inhabited. Spawning occurs among the vegetation of flooded parts. Due to regulations on our larger rivers, it is quite endangered, as it has thereby lost its spawning grounds. It is a dangerous predator of fish, often also of its own offspring. The pike (Esox lucius) is the most famous fish of Lake Cerknica, where it is still a common species today. It is threatened mainly by increasingly frequent droughts and the lake's overly rapid drying, and by introduced fish species, such as the redfin perch and the zander.
