Family: bellflowers (Campanulaceae)
Flowering time: July–August
Size: 30–40 cm
Habitat: mountain meadows, rocky and scree slopes
The sturdy, unbranched stem of the tufted bellflower (Campanula thyrsoides ssp. thyrsoides) is densely leafy with alternately arranged narrowly lanceolate leaves. They are, like the stem, softly hairy. Yellowish-white, sessile flowers in the upper part of the stem form a very dense raceme-like inflorescence. The bell-shaped corolla is 17 to 22 mm long and hairy on the outer side. The bracts supporting the flowers are about as long as the flowers. The tufted bellflower grows on moist soils in sunny locations, preferring higher elevations.
In Slovenia it is widespread in higher-lying areas in the Alpine, Subalpine, Dinaric and Pre-Dinaric regions; it avoids Pomurje and Primorje.
