Family: onions (Alliaceae)
Flowering time: June–August
Size: 20–60 cm
Habitat: dry meadows and sun-exposed shrub slopes

Pretty onion (Allium carinatum ssp. pulchellum) is very similar to the typical subspecies – to the garden onion, but unlike it, in the inflorescence it does not have developed rudimentary buds. The leaves of the pretty onion are very narrow; they are only 1 to 2 mm wide. The round stem is leafy only in the lower part, and the leaves rise at different heights. The crown inflorescence is formed by numerous long-peduncled flowers of cyclamen color. The stamens are markedly longer than the 4 to 5 mm long petals. Pretty onion grows on base-rich, very poor, dry soils.

In Slovenia it is relatively common only in the southwestern part of the country, towards the northeast it is increasingly rare.
