Common bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) is a herbaceous perennial with knobbly shoots without developed stolons (underground lateral shoots). Both the stem and the leaves are bare or slightly hairy, from which two subspecies of the common bird's-foot trefoil are distinguished. Leaves are pinnate, i.e., each leaf consists of five leaflets. They are egg-shaped; up to 20 mm long and two to three times as long as wide. The bright yellow flowers are 10 to 15 mm long and form head-shaped inflorescences at the tops of the shoots. No single inflorescence of this species ever consists of more than six flowers.
In Slovenia, the common bird's-foot trefoil is a very common species, growing on barren soils in sunny places throughout the country.
