Family: carnations (Caryophyllaceae)
Flowering time: May–September
Size: 5–20 cm
Habitat: shaded forests, moist rocky outcrops, screes and walls
Mossy whitlow-wort (Moehringia muscosa) forms delicate mats on suitable habitats. Its delicate, slender bare stems are heavily branched. It bears leaves up to 4 cm long, oppositely arranged, threadlike leaves. Mossy whitlow-wort is an evergreen plant, though its delicate appearance does not indicate this. Its snow-white flowers are four-petaled. The white petals are markedly longer than the green calyx leaves. Mossy whitlow-wort grows on more or less moist, barren basic soils in somewhat cooler places. It is widespread throughout Slovenia, though in Pomurje it has not been found.
