Family: golden-root plants (Asphodelaceae)
Flowering time: May–June
Size: 60–120 cm
Habitat: dry meadows, pastures
The flowering stalk of the common golden-root (Asphodelus albus) is erect and leafless. At its top develops a long, densely packed panicle. The first to open are the lower flowers in the inflorescence, and the last ones bloom the upper ones. The snow-white flowers are six-petaled. A brown central vein runs through the middle of the petals. All grooved, fleshy leaves are basal, strap-shaped. They form a leaf rosette. It grows at higher elevations, mainly on carbonate-rich soils rich in nutrients. It occurs almost exclusively in the southwestern part of Slovenia, in the submediterranean and Dinaric regions; in Notranjski Park it thrives only on Slivnica.
As a vulnerable species, it is listed on the Slovenian Red List of Endangered Plants.
