The abbreviation agg. after the name denotes several very similar species from the group of erect bur-reed (Sparganium erectum agg.), which differ only in the shape and size of the fruits. The stem and leaves of the erect bur-reed are erect. The branched inflorescence consists of unisexual globose inflorescences.
The larger, lower inflorescences are female. The upper, smaller inflorescences are male. It thrives on wet soils rich in nutrients.
