Large green bulblet

Family: umbellifers (Apiaceae)
Flowering period: June–August
Height: 30–100 cm
Habitat: moist forest edges, among tall stalks, meadows on deep soils

The tiny flowers of the large-headed umbel (Astrantia major) form semicircular inflorescences, which are surrounded by greenish to pinkish-white involucral leaves. They are as long as the umbel, and on them there are 3–5 longitudinal veins connected crosswise. The inflorescence, together with the involucral leaves, is 2–3 cm wide and looks like a single flower. We call it pacvet, and pollinators notice it more easily. It thrives in partial shade on moderately moist, alkaline soils throughout Slovenia.
