Dense, spike-like inflorescences of the common loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) form six-petaled scarlet-red flowers arranged in whorls. The sessile, lanceolate stem leaves are arranged oppositely. It has sometimes been used to stop bleeding. It is a common wetland plant that grows throughout Slovenia. In Europe and Asia it is native, in America, where it was introduced as an ornamental or medicinal plant, it is an invasive species.
