Knee-shaped blood vessel

Bledo vijolični cvet kolenčaste krvomočnice (Geranium nodosum) z zamegljenim zelenim ozadjem.

Family: cranesbills (Geraniaceae)
Flowering time: May–July
Size: 20–50 cm
Habitat: forests and among shrubs

The branched stem of knee-shaped cranesbill (Geranium nodosum) is markedly thickened at the nodes. The node is a part of the stem from which a leaf or lateral shoot arises. The leaf blades with irregularly serrated margins are more than halfway divided into three to five oblong lobes. At the top of the shoots, usually two long-peduncled flowers develop. The pale lilac petals are 12 to 18 mm long. At the tip of the lobed petals are dark purple veins. At the end, the beak-shaped, short-haired fruit is 2.5 to 3.5 cm long.

The knee-shaped cranesbill is restricted to forest habitats in the southwestern and western parts of Slovenia.
