Family: orchids (Orchidaceae)
Bloom time: May–July
Size: 20–60 cm
Habitat: forests, forest edges, clearings and shrub-covered slopes
The green-flowered helleborine (Platanthera chlorantha) also thrives best in the forest. At first glance it is very similar to its close relative the two-leaved helleborine (Platanthera bifolia). The biggest difference between the two species is in the arrangement of the pollen packets – the pollinia. The yellowish pollinia are distinctly separated in the green-flowered helleborine. Its long greenish spur, to which the flower is attached at the back, ends by widening somewhat. In addition, its flowers have a barely perceptible scent.
The green-flowered helleborine occurs scattered across Slovenia. In our country it is, like the other orchids, protected.
