Family: orchids (Orchidaceae)
Flowering time: May–August
Size: 10–40 cm
Habitat: open meadows and forest clearings
The basal lanceolate leaves of the speckled-flowered orchid (Orchis ustulata) form a rosette, and some leaves clasp the lower part of the stem. The flower buds and the outer side of the hood on the open flowers are distinctly dark crimson, which is why this orchid is also called Pogorelček. The hood of its small flowers is formed by five petals. The lower petal - a deeply trilobed honey-colored lip - is white and speckled with a few crimson spots. It is widespread, scattered throughout Slovenia.
In Slovenia, as with other species in the orchid family, it is protected. In addition, it is listed on Slovenia's endangered plant list.
