Bud lily

Brstična lilija (Lilium bulbiferum) z velikimi oranžno rdečimi cvetovi in ozkimi listi

Family: lilies (Liliaceae)
Flowering period: May–July
Size: 50–100 cm
Habitat: clearings, meadows, forest edges, among shrubs

Unlike the Turkish lily, the bulbiferous lily (Lilium bulbiferum) has erect, funnel-shaped flowers. Orange to red petals are often brown-spotted. The stem is densely leafy with narrow leaves. In the axil of the upper leaves there are axillary bulblets, which gave it its name. They serve vegetative reproduction; when they fall to the ground they sprout young plants. It thrives on dry soils, more common towards southwestern Slovenia. Here the bulbiferous lily is protected, and on the Red List of plant species it is classified as a vulnerable species.

One of the main reasons for its endangerment is surely overharvesting.
