Family: lilies (Liliaceae)
Blooming time: June–July
Size: 50–100 cm
Habitat: overgrown bogs, meadows, among shrubs, light forests and forest edges
The erect stem of the Carniolan lily (Lilium carniolicum) is usually multi-flowered. Only rarely at the top of the stem does a single bright orange flower with an unpleasant odour unfold, from which only the stamens protrude downward. When the flower opens, all six orange petals speckled with black spots are folded back completely. The stem is densely alternately leafed with lanceolate leaves, which along the margins and veins on the underside are softly hairy. It is widely distributed throughout Slovenia, only in the northeast of the country it does not grow.
It makes a wonderful ornament to the areas where it grows, moreover it is listed on the Slovenian Red List of endangered plants and is protected here, so do not pick it or destroy it.
