Common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is a stately, aromatically fragrant herbaceous perennial. Its upright stem branches at the top. It is leafy, with pinnately divided leaves that are oblong-lanceolate in outline. The leaf blades have serrated margins. At the tops of the shoots, numerous, about 1 cm wide, bright yellow heads – inflorescences, characteristic of the daisy family and chicory family. A feature of the heads of common tansy is that they lack ray florets. The inflorescence in this species therefore forms only disc florets. It grows on moderately fertile soils in open, sunny locations.
It is widespread throughout Slovenia, but is more common inland and toward the eastern part of the country. Common tansy is slightly poisonous!
