The upright, branched stem of the dyer's plant (Serratula tinctoria) is bare. Its leaves are not spiny. The lower, ovate to lanceolate, cauline leaves are not divided. At the base they narrow into a petiole, their edge is sharply serrated. The upper leaves are sessile. Their leaf blade is pinnately divided; the terminal lobe is large. At the tops of the shoots numerous cylindrical heads develop. The numerous tubular flowers are scarlet, and the dark violet involucral leaves have a narrow whitish edge.
The dyer's plant grows on fresh to moist, moderately rich soils throughout Slovenia.
