The tall stem of horse's mane (Eupatorium cannabinum) is usually branched at the top. It is foliated with opposite, three- to five-lobed palmately divided leaves with a coarse-toothed margin. Leaves on the lateral shoots are often simple. Some pink tubular flowers form a head. Many heads form composite inflorescences at the tops of the shoots.
It thrives on base-rich soils rich in nutrients and is common throughout Slovenia.
The pink flowers of hemp-agrimony attract the striped hawk moth (Callimorpha quadripunctaria). This is a nocturnal moth in the hawk moth group, which is active also during the day and is listed among the qualifying species for the designation of Natura 2000 sites. By protecting these areas, EU member states aim to preserve species diversity for future generations.
