Scarlet flowers of the marsh thistle (Cirsium palustre) are grouped in 1–1.5 cm wide heads, which are dense at the top of a winged, very spiny stem. It is either simple or branched only in the upper part. The stiff leaves are leathery. They are divided into serrated lobes that end in spines. The leaves are green on top, and densely white-haired underneath. It thrives in moist habitats throughout Slovenia.
