Family: ostričevke (Cyperaceae)
Flowering time: June–August
Size: 80–200 cm
Habitat: peatlands, marshes and river banks

Common sedge (Cladium mariscus) has a stem up to the top densely clothed with narrow leaves. On them a person quickly cuts themselves, as along the edges and the middle of the underside are scattered with sharp curved teeth. In the soil it has a thick creeping rhizome, along the ground it sends out long stolons, with which it can spread into dense stands. Some yellow-brown tufted inflorescences are developed along the sides of the stem, one at its top. In Slovenia it is quite rare, appearing here and there in central and southern Slovenia. It grows in sunny places, on barren, base-rich moist soils, which can also dry out for long periods.

It is threatened by the disappearance of suitable habitats, which are particularly sensitive to human disturbances, hence in Slovenia it is listed on the Red List of plant species.
