Sooty tit

Črnikasti sitovec (Schoenus nigricans) v družbi z drugimi rastlina z značilnimi ščetinastimi cvetovi.

Family: sedges (Cyperaceae)
Flowering time: May–July
Size: 20–50 cm
Habitat: low bogs and marsh meadows

The almost round stem of the blackish sedge (Schoenus nigricans) is at most twice as long as the bristly basal leaves. The erect stem, after flowering, arches bow-shaped to the ground. At the top of the stem develops a 1 to 1.5 cm long composite inflorescence, formed by 5 to 15 spikelets. Spikelets are partial inflorescences characteristic of some plant families, for example sedges and grasses. Each spikelet consists of several small, inconspicuous flowers. The bract is two to five times as long as the dark inflorescence.

The blackish sedge grows on wet, barren soils. In Slovenia it is rare, occurring scattered across western, central and eastern Slovenia. It is listed as a vulnerable species on the Slovenian Red List.
