Family: hawkbits (Cichoriaceae)
Blooming time: May–June
Size: 30–70 cm
Habitat: meadows
Typically, the branched stem of meadow goat's-beard (Tragopogon pratensis) is bare. Its sessile, long-pointed, narrow-lanceolate leaves at the base clasp the stem. At the end of the side branches develops a single plate-shaped, spreading head. This inflorescence, which in diameter measures 5 to 7 cm, is formed by numerous tongue-shaped flowers. The vivid yellow tongue-shaped flowers are usually somewhat longer than the green involucral leaves that surround the head. Meadow goat's-beard prefers to grow on fresh, moderately nutrient-rich soils.
It is widespread throughout Slovenia, only in the mountainous region of northwestern Slovenia is it absent.
