Family: rose family (Rosaceae)
Flowering time: May–July
Size: 20–60 cm
Habitat: moist forest edges, banks, marshy meadows
At the top of the stem of the water avens (Geum rivale) a few cup-shaped flowers develop. A pink corolla 10–15 mm long has a red edge. The calyx is brownish-red. The fruits end with a hooked beak and a plumose appendage. With them they cling to animals, which carry them away and thus disperse the species. Long-petioled leaves are pinnately divided; the terminal leaflet is very large. It can be simple, usually with three or five lobes. The rhizome of the water avens has been used for diarrhea, loss of appetite, and throat inflammation. The species is found in moist habitats throughout Slovenia, except in the submediterranean part.
