A tall, upright stem of elm-leaved meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) bears pinnate leaves that end in a large trilobed leaflet. Numerous yellowish-white five-petaled flowers are grouped in a branched inflorescence. When crushed between the fingers, the plant smells of bitter almonds. Throughout Slovenia it thrives on moist, poorly aerated soils rich in nutrients, where it often grows in larger groups.
