Alpine rose (Rosa pendulina) is usually a prostrate shrub with developed underground lateral shoots – rhizomes. Flowering shoots and young growth are usually without spines, in the lower part the stem is clothed with delicate, straight needle-like spines. Pinnate leaves consist of seven to eleven leaflets with a doubly serrated margin. A 1 to 3 cm long petiole is mostly covered with stalked glandular hairs. On it develops a single flower of pink to crimson-red color, about 4 cm wide. The glossy red, narrowly ovate fruit is covered with bristly spines and stalked glands. The persistent, five-lobed calyx lobes protrude forward. Alpine rose grows on moderately rich, fresh soils at higher elevations throughout almost all of Slovenia.
