Hairy foam

Cvetoča dlakava penuša (Cardamine hirsuta) na neporaslih tleh.

Family: crucifers (Brassicaceae)
Flowering time: March–June
Size: 5–30 cm
Habitat: lawns, along paths, among shrubs and cultivated land

Basal leaves of hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta) form a rosette. They consist of up to four pairs of leaflets. The terminal leaflet is larger than the lateral ones. Often purple-tinged, the plant sends up numerous stems bearing two to four leaves, which are not attached to a bare to sparsely haired stem. At the top of the stems an inflorescence develops, formed by small white flowers. The petals of the four-petaled flowers are about 3 mm long. The mature fruit is a 12–25 mm long silique (i.e., more than three times longer than its width).

Hairy bittercress is, with the exception of the northeastern part, widespread throughout Slovenia. It grows on moist, nutrient-rich soils.
