The erect stem of the common viper's bugloss (Echium vulgare) is black-spotted. It is covered with protruding white hairs and densely leafy with narrowly lanceolate leaves. The hairy stem leaves are up to 10 cm long. The common viper's bugloss is a plant with abundant flowering with a long branched inflorescence. The blue flower is bilabiate. It is 12–22 mm long. In it are clearly visible stamens of varying lengths with cyclamen-colored filaments. 

The common viper's bugloss is widely distributed and a common species in Slovenia.
