Bloom time: July–September

Habitat: dry meadows, forest edges and among shrubs

Common oregano (Origanum vulgare) is locally called oregano. It is characterized by an aromatic scent that adds charm to Mediterranean dishes. Essential oils are secreted by glands on the leaves and stem. The branched stem at the base sends out side shoots. Opposite, short-petioled leaves are egg-shaped, 1–4 cm long. Small flowers develop in the axils of purple bracts. Pink flowers are 4–7 mm long and at the tips of the shoots form dense globular inflorescences.

Oregano grows best on dry soils, and it is widespread throughout Slovenia.
