Habitat: dry meadows, forest edges, forests, warm shrub slopes
The erect stem of the common betony (Betonica officinalis) is usually unbranched. It can be hairy or almost bare. The same applies to the leaves. Low, long-petioled basal leaves with a heart-shaped base form a leaf rosette. The edge of their ovate leaf blades is coarsely serrated. The stem is also leafy with two to three pairs of opposite leaves. The two-lipped flowers, 10–15 mm long, cyclamen-colored, form a dense inflorescence at the top of the stem.
The common betony is a common and widely distributed plant in Slovenia, thriving on poor soils.
