Field violet

Cvet njivske vijolice (Viola arvensis) od blizu.

Family: violets (Violaceae)
Flowering time: April–October
Size: 10–40 cm
Habitat: cultivated soils

The small flowers of field violet (Viola arvensis) brighten the edges of fields, where this species most often grows. The slightly scented flowers are 8 to 15 mm long. As is characteristic of pansies, field violet also has four petals oriented upward, with one downward. The upper petals are pale yellow, while the lower one is dark yellow. It is adorned with short dark stripes that direct pollinators into the interior of the flower. The petals are shorter or as long as the green sepals. The leaf blades of the largest stem leaves are elongated, about 1.5 times as long as wide.

Field violet is widely distributed in Slovenia, occurring almost everywhere except the Julian Alps.
