From July 17 to 26, a student research camp for biologists is taking place in the mystical land of Lake Cerknica. Since we’d like to share our enthusiasm for exploring nature with you, we invite you to our open-house research days, where you’ll be able to get a glimpse into the work of young researchers, learn about their research methods, and discover the extraordinary natural heritage of our very special piece of the world.
Join us on Monday, July 20, at 9:30 in the parking lot in front of the Visitor Center Lake Cerknica at Dolenje Jezero.
Lake Cerknica is home to many interesting creatures, including water beetles.
During this field workshop, we’ll explore who lives in the waters of Lake Cerknica and how researchers discover these often-overlooked animals. Together, we’ll head to a location where we’ll check the traps set the previous evening and identify the species that have been caught in them.
Using dip nets, we’ll try to catch other water beetles and observe them up close, while learning how to identify them, what their way of life is like, and how they’ve adapted to the changing conditions of the intermittent lake. It will be particularly interesting to discover where the water beetles take refuge when Lake Cerknica dries up.
We’ll also expand our exploration to the surrounding meadows and riparian vegetation, where we’ll discover other interesting organisms associated with the lake environment.
