From July 17 to 26, a student research camp for biologists is taking place in the mystical land of Lake Cerknica. Since we’d like to share our enthusiasm for exploring nature with you, we invite you to our open-house research days, where you’ll be able to get a glimpse into the work of young researchers, learn about their research methods, and discover the extraordinary natural heritage of our very special piece of the world.
Join us on Thursday, June 23, at 16:30 at Gorenje Jezero, near the Malnšče observation platform.
Have you ever wondered what kind of life lies hidden deep beneath our feet? In this workshop, we’ll explore the mysterious world of underground organisms that we usually never see.
Together, we’ll head to one of the karst springs that feed the Cerknica polje. These springs are true windows into the underground—water flows into them from the karst underground world, bringing its mysterious inhabitants along with it. Among them are tiny aquatic invertebrates, such as amphipods of the genus Niphargus, which have adapted to life in complete darkness.
Using research equipment, we’ll collect samples of aquatic organisms, learn how they’re studied, and discover why these nearly invisible inhabitants are important for understanding the underground world and preserving Lake Cerknica. You’ll also learn how underground habitats, karst springs, and the lake are inextricably linked to the water that circulates through the karst landscape.
