From July 17 to 26, a student research camp for biologists is taking place in the mystical land of Lake Cerknica. Since we’d like to share our enthusiasm for exploring nature with you, we invite you to our open-house research days, where you’ll be able to get a glimpse into the work of young researchers, learn about their research methods, and discover the extraordinary natural heritage of our very special piece of the world.
Join us on Sunday, July 19, at 20:00 in the parking lot in front of the Visitor Center Lake Cerknica at Dolenje Jezero.
The forest is teeming with life, even though we often don’t even notice its inhabitants. They leave behind numerous traces that reveal to researchers who has been roaming the forest, where they feed, and how they use their habitat.
During this field workshop, we’ll learn about the forest animals that live in and around Cerknica—from roe deer and red deer to foxes, bears, and other large predators. We’ll learn to identify their tracks, distinguish between footprints, droppings, and other signs of their presence, and discover how researchers use this information to study and monitor wildlife.
To wrap up, we’ll take part in a hands-on demonstration of a jackal census in the field and learn about one of the methods researchers use to monitor the presence of this increasingly common species in our area.
In case of rain, the workshop will be canceled.
