Carnival in Cerknica once again attracted a large crowd and created a truly festive atmosphere in the town. Approximately 22,000 visitors attended the event. This year’s carnival was particularly special, as Cerknica is celebrating the golden anniversary of its carnival tradition – 50 years of organized festivities. The theme of this year’s event, Golden Wedding, symbolically highlighted the celebration of life, the strength of community, and the passing on of values between generations. This symbolism closely aligns with the mission of the LIFE for SEEDS project, which is dedicated to preserving plant diversity and safeguarding seeds for the future.

Distributing promotional seed packets

The LIFE for SEEDS project was therefore also presented at the carnival, introducing visitors in a friendly and accessible way to the importance of preserving species-rich grasslands and the role of seed banks. One of the most charming activities was the distribution of promotional seed packets, handed out by children dressed as flowers, Carniolan honeybees, and beekeepers, adding an extra layer of symbolism to the parade. Through their playful presence, the children illustrated the connection between plants, pollinators, and humans, conveying the message that species-rich grasslands are essential for maintaining biodiversity. Many visitors thus took home not only a small packet of seeds, but also the idea that everyone can contribute to nature conservation.

At the LIFE for SEEDS information stand, visitors could learn about the project’s importance for the nature of Lake Cerknica, for Slovenia, and for Europe more broadly. We presented the role of seed banks in the long-term conservation of plant species and explained how the project contributes to protecting species-rich grassland habitats, which are among the most endangered ecosystems in Europe. We also emphasized that seeds are a true natural heritage – something we can preserve today so it can grow tomorrow.

For younger visitors, we prepared several interactive activities. One of the most popular was a puzzle featuring plant species from the Notranjska Regional Park, where children could learn about meadow plants through play. Another highlight was the “Pollinators” game, which demonstrates in a fun and interactive way how plants and pollinators depend on one another. Through play, children quickly understand that plants and pollinators are interconnected, and that more diverse meadows support a greater diversity of pollinators.

By participating in one of the largest public events in the region, the LIFE for SEEDS project reached a wide audience and successfully communicated the importance of preserving plant diversity in a clear and engaging way. Events like this show that nature conservation can be effectively combined with cultural and social activities, bringing environmental messages closer to people in an appealing and experiential way.
