As part of the LIFE OrnamentalIAS project, we have set up a special container for invasive alien plants species  in Dolenja vas pri Cerknici, intended for their safe collection and proper disposal. The container is located at the end of the village and is primarily intended for the Notranjska Park team, which regularly fills it during field work, but it is also open to local residents who remove invasive plants from their gardens and land.

The container is in place from the beginning of August until the end of this year. In 2026, we plan to put it back in place in June, when the main growing season begins and with it the greatest risk of invasive species spreading.

A person is standing next to a large green container outdoors and placing invasive alien plants into it. On the front of the container, there is a white sign with the text "Container for invasive plants" and the logos of the project partners. In the background, there are trees with autumn leaves and part of a building's roof.

Plants you can discard:

  • Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia)
  • American goldenrod (Solidago gigantea, Solidago canadensis)
  • Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera)
  • Annual fleabane (Erigeron annuus)
  • Cutleaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata)
  • Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica)
  • Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca)
  • American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana)
  • Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus)
  • Summer lilac (Buddleja davidii)
  • And others...

The container is intended exclusively for invasive alien plants. Grass, leaves, branches, waste, or other garden debris do not belong in it. The collected plants are taken away for destruction.

How we filled the container: Field removal of invasive plants

As part of the LIFE OrnamentalIAS project, employees of the Notranjska Park have rolled up their sleeves several times in recent months and headed out into the field to remove invasive alien plants that are spreading too quickly across our meadows, forest and paths. At various locations, we mainly removed goldenrod, American pokeweed, common ragweed, thornapple , and North American nebine. These plants pose a serious threat to our native plants, as they displace them, alter their habitat, and cause a loss of biodiversity.

Field actions are an important part of our efforts, as they systematically reduce the presence of invasive species and enable the regeneration of native habitats. At the same time, they are also an opportunity to raise awareness among the local community and park visitors about the importance of timely identification of invasive plants.

In the middle of the picture, there is a large patch of these plants, surrounded by people who are pulling them out and collecting them. On the ground, there is a black plastic bag ready for waste material. In the background, there are tall trees and a cloudless blue sky.

Working together to preserve nature

We invite residents and visitors to join us in caring for nature: Observe the species around you during your walks, remove invasive plants from your land, and dispose of them safely in the container in Dolenja vas. Together, we can make an important contribution to preserving biodiversity and protecting our very special piece of the world.

LIFE OrnamentalIAS

LIFE OrnamentalIAS addresses ornamental invasive alien plants at three levels: preventive action, early detection and rapid response, and their management and removal.
