LIFE OrnamentalIAS: We are strengthening biodiversity with new plantings

The wooden apiary stands in a clearing at the edge of the forest, surrounded by tall grass, shrubs, and mighty conifers in the background. Sunlight falls on the meadow, emphasizing the natural surroundings.

Just before the end of the year, Notranjska Park carried out two successful planting actions of native tree and shrub species as part of the LIFE OrnamentalIAS project. Students from Notranjski odred Primary School and representatives of the Cerknica Beekeepers’ Association joined us in the activities. Together, we contributed to improving forage for pollinators and to the long-term stability of very special piece of the world.

Why native species?

Native tree species are a key pillar of our ecosystem. They are not only adapted to local climatic conditions, but also provide food and shelter for numerous animal species. Within the project, we focused on species that are particularly important for bees, especially in early spring.

Cooperation with beekeepers

Together with a representative of the Cerknica Beekeepers’ Association, Mr. Matija Mišič, we planted the new saplings at a location right next to Lake Cerknica, in close proximity to the local apiaries.

We planted:

  • Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas): One of the earliest flowering species, providing a crucial source of the first nectar and pollen at the time when bee colonies begin to awaken.
  • Common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna): Provides abundant forage later in the spring.
  • Wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis): Its rich white blossoms produce large amounts of nectar.

Primary school students

The second planting action was carried out in cooperation with Notranjski odred Primary School in Cerknica. Under the guidance of their teachers and our staff, students took up tools and planted saplings of wild service tree and cornelian cherry, gaining hands-on experience and learning about the importance of planting native tree species.

Together for a sustainable future

Through such activities, Notranjska Park strengthens cooperation with the local community and takes care of the long-term health of the natural environment. We invite everyone to bring a piece of biodiversity to their own doorstep. Every native tree or shrub planted in a garden becomes a valuable island of life for bees, butterflies, and birds. Instead of non-native species, choose native ones this year.
