LIFE TRŠCA: Camera traps reveal surprising guests

A bear and cub are standing in a grassy field surrounded by tall grass and green vegetation.

As part of the LIFE TRSCA project, we focused on studying one of the most fascinating phenomena of Lake Cerknica – the so-called lake windows. These are patches of open water without vegetation, completely surrounded by a wide belt of lush lake plants, mainly reed beds.

To gain deeper insight into what happens in these hidden habitats during different phases – when the water level is high, when it gradually recedes, and when the lake completely dries out – we installed camera traps in selected lake windows.

Our hypothesis was that biodiversity would peak during the period of declining water levels, when water remains only in isolated hollows and riverbeds, while disappearing elsewhere. Under these conditions, animals concentrate in smaller areas, increasing the likelihood of interactions between species.

During the period when the lake is full, the recordings mostly captured waterbirds, which use the lake as a place to rest, hide, and feed.

As the lake dried up, the composition of species changed. The camera traps captured animals rarely seen at Lake Cerknica – including deer, roe deer, wildcats, jackals, otters, and even a family of bears.

The results show that the drying of the lake does not reduce biodiversity, but instead marks a shift to a different ecological dynamic. During dry periods, lake windows become gathering points for a variety of species – from birds to large mammals – confirming their key role in the Lake Cerknica ecosystem.

The collected data provide valuable insights into the impact of hydrological changes on animal communities. At the same time, they highlight the importance of preserving the lake’s natural drying regime as a cornerstone for biodiversity and the long-term protection of this unique natural phenomenon.

Notice

Data collection is intended exclusively for observing wildlife at the lake. Camera traps are mounted on special mechanisms that allow them to move with the water level. Locations are carefully selected away from common visitor paths, but you may still encounter one during your visit to Lake Cerknica. In the field, they are marked with LIFE TRŠCA and Notranjski Park stickers. Please do not approach or move them.
