For this purpose, the park launched a pilot project to compost plant biomass from Lake Cerknica. Within the framework of the LIFE TRŠCA project, we examined whether composting grassland from Lake Cerknica is meaningful from a conservation, economic, and practical perspective.

In the second half of August, with the help of a local contractor, we delivered 50 tons of biomass from Lake Cerknica to the ROSA composting facility in Vrhnika. The material is already in the composting phase, which on average takes two years. If the process proves successful, in about two years we plan to offer local farmers and gardeners free compost or fertilizer in 20-liter bags.

A truck with an open trailer filled with rectangular bales of hay is parked on a grassy field. Next to the truck is a yellow loader that lifts and loads the bales onto the trailer. In the background are trees, meadows, and a wooded hilly landscape under a blue sky.

At the composting facility, the delivered bales were untied and the material was spread out under a covered area in the form of a long straight pile, about 1 m high and 2 m wide. Material containing bacteria was added to the biomass to accelerate the composting process. The mixture was mechanically turned for about 14 days and then transferred into closed basins, which are inaccessible due to strong odor and poor light. In these basins, a controlled composting process takes place, where maintaining optimal temperature and humidity is crucial for producing a high-quality final product.

LIFE TRŠCA

With LIFE TRŠCA we will improve the conservation status of the intermittent Lake Cerknica.

The implementation of extensive nature conservation projects exceeds the financial capacity of the local community, therefore Notranjska Park regularly applies for projects with the possibility of co-financing by the European Union.
