LIFE TRŠCA: Establishment of continuous water level measurements for monitoring the drying up of various lake parts

Measurements have confirmed previous knowledge that different parts of the plain dry up in different periods, but they have also provided additional information that in different hydrogeological situations individual areas show different deviations in water level. In "Zadnji kraj", for example, the water level is lower most of the time, sometimes higher than at the Dolenje Jezero water gauge station. Joint measurements of water level indicate that the groundwater level (in the caves Big and Small Karlovica) is strongly dependent on the narrowing of cave tunnels downstream from the measuring points.

Dynamics of the water level in Zadnji kraj and at the VP Dolenje Jezero over a period of 10 months

During the LIFE Tršca project, due to the need for a better insight into the dynamics of water levels around reed beds and lake basins, we upgraded with continuous water level measurements. In cooperation with the Notranjski park, we identified 8 priority areas, at which, at the end of August 2024, when the water had completely dried up, we installed automatic water level (pressure) sensors and water temperature sensors. The chosen areas are as follows:

  • The confluence of Lipsenjščica in Stržen
  • The confluence of Žerovniščica and Stržen
  • Zadnji kraj – Kotel
  • Levišča
  • Ajnce jame
  • Velika Ponikva
  • Trščenke
  • Osredki

Placement of the sensors on the wall stone and the bedrock in the lake basin

Where possible, we installed the measuring devices on stainless steel rods, which were then placed on the bedrock. Where the bedrock was not accessible, we installed the measuring devices on bricks, which were placed at the bottom of the depression (lake basin). We marked all measuring points and determined their exact position and altitude using geodetic measurements. Water level measurements will continue until at least the end of 2029, so we ask passers-by not to move the bricks and rods with measuring instruments, as this could affect the accuracy of the measurements. The approximate locations of the measuring devices are shown on the attached map and photographs.

Location of the selected measuring points

In anticipation of high-quality measurements and contributions to a better understanding of the dynamics of the water level and the local habitat types, we would like to thank everyone involved in advance.

Štirje ljudje stojijo na travnatem polju. Trije nosijo klobuke, nahrbtnike in škornje za v vodo, eden pa ima belo majico in drži predmet v rokah. Na tleh je črna vreča za smeti. V ozadju so visoka trava, oddaljene gore in jasno nebo z nekaj oblaki.
