As part of the LIFE TRŠCA project, we have recently reached an important milestone – we have completed the phase in which we established the structure of a new land management database in the Narcis information system. The Slovenian Institute for Nature Protection plays a key coordinating and content-related role in this, as it leads the development of the data model and ensures that solutions are aligned with nature conservation needs and standards.
The new database is now functional in terms of structure: tables, relationships between them, and schemas have been established, and initial test data has been added. This has created a foundation for future use and upgrades, while also enabling users and developers to test the system, verify the compliance of the data model with the needs of conservationists, and test basic operations. It is important to note that the database does not yet contain final production content – it is currently in a test phase intended for verification and optimization of the data model.
The database is being developed in cooperation with Notranjska Park and the DOPPS - Birdlife Slovenia, which are contributing their extensive experience in fieldwork and sample data. As the project leader, the Slovenian Institute for Nature Protection is directing the design of data structures, connecting partners, and ensuring that the new database fits into the existing nature conservation information infrastructure in terms of content and technology.
The new information model will enable easy recording of parcels, management areas, legal relationships, planned objectives, and implementation tasks in the future. All accompanying documents, from spatial maps to strategic plans, can now be stored in one place.
Linking the database to the Narcis information system will facilitate the exchange of nature conservation data between organisations and institutions, including park administrations.
Although the database is still in its early stages, it represents an important step forward in the digitization of nature conservation land management. With its help, the work of nature conservationists will be more transparent, the planning of measures more effective, and long-term nature conservation easier to implement.
