In 2025, wild animals were monitored at the Lake Cerknica, confirming once again the great biodiversity of our very special piece of the world. The activities were carried out as part of the LIFE TRŠCA project and focused on long-term monitoring of the state of natural habitats and the presence of characteristic and rarer animal species.

We used camera traps for monitoring, which were installed at various locations: at the edge of the forest, at springs, and also inside the lake near the lake windows. This allows us to compare when and how often species appear in different habitats. With camera traps, we can monitor animals throughout the day and in all seasons.

The method of monitoring with camera traps allows data to be collected without directly disturbing the animals, which contributes to greater reliability of results and reduces the impact of research activities on nature. This allows us to record some of the rarer and more shy species, like great bittern, eurasian lynx or brown bear, or to observe their behavior, which would otherwise be hidden from human observers.

Occasionally, we just document a beautiful scene from nature.

The monitoring results provide an important basis for further nature conservation measures, area management planning, and evaluation of the effects of activities carried out within the LIFE TRŠCA project. At the same time, the collected footage contributes significantly to raising public awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation and the role of Lake Cerknica as one of Slovenia's key natural areas.

Projects in the Notranjska Park

The implementation of extensive nature conservation projects exceeds the financial capacity of the local community, therefore Notranjska Park regularly applies for projects with the possibility of co-financing by the European Union.
