Within the LIFE TRŠCA project, an expert working group on land use has been established with the aim of preparing proposals for new and revised agri-environmental and other agricultural policy measures to support the conservation of marsh habitats of the intermittent Lake Cerknica.

The expert working group consists of representatives of the project partners – DOPPS – BirdLife Slovenia, the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation, the University of Ljubljana – Biotechnical Faculty, the Karst Research Institute (ZRC SAZU), the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, and the Agricultural and Forestry Institute of Ljubljana - representative of the Agricultural Advisory Service Cerknica, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, as well as representatives of local agrarian communities, hunting associations, and the local fishing association. Such a broad and multidisciplinary composition enables the integration of conservation, agricultural, management, and local perspectives in the development of measures.

The group will meet ten times during the project period, with meetings coordinated by the Notranjska Park. So far, four meetings have already been held, focusing on reviewing expert background materials and discussing challenges related to the management of marsh habitats. The group has also examined the Common Agricultural Policy and the effects of different measures on marsh vegetation and the breeding ecology of birds. The most important phase still ahead is the development and harmonisation of concrete measure proposals.

To strengthen knowledge and review good practices, a study visit abroad will also be organised in 2026, enabling members to gain insight into experiences in developing agri-environmental measures.

The final outcome of the expert working group will be proposals for new or revised measures targeting reed beds, tall sedge communities, and riparian marsh vegetation, as well as a proposal for a revised map of areas eligible for inclusion in these measures. The proposals will be incorporated into the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy for the period 2028–2034, which is being prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food.
